Night Animals: Owls and Bats
Piko rushes to the Lantern Tree at sunset, but shh! Flit the little bat is still asleep. Then 'hoo-hoo'... the night animals are waking up! A gentle, not-spooky song about owls and bats for ages 2–5.
Actions: Chorus: make a big circle sun with your arms and slowly lower it on 'Sun goes down', then point up at the moon. On 'Who's awake? Come peek with me!' peek out from behind your hands. Chant: whisper 'Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...' while fluttering your fingers, then make a round mouth for a soft 'HOOT!'. Verse 1: rest your head on your hands for sleeping, then blink big eyes. Verse 2: bend over and let your arms hang down like a bat, then flap. Bridge: curl your fingers into owl eyes, turn your head from side to side, flap your wings low and high, then glide on quiet tiptoes. Verse 3: rub your eyes and wave goodnight. In the 'Again!' round, whisper the whole song as quietly as an owl flies. Talk about it: owls and bats are wild animals, so we look and listen from far away and never touch them.
Chorus
Sun goes down, the moon is bright,
Night animals wake up at night!
Owls go hoo, and bats fly free,
Who's awake? Come peek with me!
Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...
Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...
Hoo-hoo, flitter-flit... HOOT!
Verse 1
Hoo the owl sleeps in the day,
Cozy in her tree, she naps away.
Blink, blink! Big round eyes!
Owls see well in starry skies.
Verse 2
Flit the bat hangs upside down,
Sleeping all day, safe and sound.
Night is here! He flaps his wings,
Off to munch on buzzy things.
Chorus
Sun goes down, the moon is bright,
Night animals wake up at night!
Owls go hoo, and bats fly free,
Who's awake? Come peek with me!
Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...
Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...
Hoo-hoo, flitter-flit... HOOT!
Bridge
Make big owl eyes, round and wide,
Turn your head from side to side,
Flap your wings, swoop low, swoop high,
Quiet as an owl flying by.
Verse 3
Piko's sleepy, off to bed,
Hoo and Flit wake up instead.
We sleep at night, they play till light,
Hoo-hoo, Flit! Goodnight, goodnight!
Chorus
Sun goes down, the moon is bright,
Night animals wake up at night!
Owls go hoo, and bats fly free,
Who's awake? Come peek with me!
Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...
Hoo-hoo... flitter-flit...
Hoo-hoo, flitter-flit... HOOT!
Outro
Who's awake? Who's awake?
Hoo-hoo, flitter-flit... HOOT!
